Nebraska Deputation to General Convention 2006

Nebraska Deputation to General Convention 2006
Th have a woman nominated for Presiding Bishop on the 30th anniversary of the approval of the ordinationof women was impressive, but I didn't think it was possible to elect a woman pb! I have sat at worship for the past week and engaged the gospel with Katherine JeffertsSchori and have been very impressed with her. I have saud fir severak days that she would make an excellent pb, but I didn't think it was possible. WOW!

One of the thingsd that impressed me as I sat in the alternates seating was how dignified the procedure is. Applause is not permitted in the House of Deputies when the results of votes are announced out of respect for those who do not agree. Some aplause was heard from the glallery, but I believe the members of the House honored this prohibition. I have been involved in the national conventions of several other organizations wher this respect for the oppositin would be unheard of. I was surprised that there was not more opposition when confirmation was debated on the floor and even more surprised with how overwhelming the vote was. For a woman who was denied the opportuity to go to seminary after college because the ordination of women was not possible, this is overwhelming. While we must continue to respect the feelings of those who will not agree with this election, it is certainly a new dy in The Epsicopal Church.
